Feeling a little unsure about finding employment?
Ambivalence is defined as the state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone. It's often the feeling many veterans have regarding seeking competitive employment.
Ambivalence is a very normal feeling to have as you begin your job search. Often, depending on the situation, you may find yourself second guessing your abilities based on not having had to seek employment in quite a while. You may have some barriers you don't know how to address on your resume or during the interview. Well, there is assistance available to you. I encounter employers every day that are seeking to employ veterans due to the value we bring to the workplace. We have team of Vocations Specialists that will assist you in dealing with ambivalence and any other barrier in your path to securing competitive employment.
A great way to overcome ambivalence and other barriers is to simply partner with your local VA Employment Services team. If you are a veteran currently dealing with homelessness or at risk for homeless you can reach out to me. If you are not having issues with homelessness ask your physician to submit a consult for Compensated Work Therapy and you will be contacted by a member of our employment team.
Finally, thanks for stopping by and reviewing the monthly newsletter, I hope you find some worthwhile information.

Someone You Should Know
Jessi Hatfield, CRC Vocational Services Supervisor St. Louis VA Health Care System
I want to thank you for signing up for our newsletter! I took over as the Vocational Service Supervisor in February 2022. As a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, my passion is helping people improve their quality of life no matter what barriers they face. I’ve been a Vocational Specialist at the St. Louis VA since 2013. During that time, I worked in all of our homeless programs, our community based service, and in our spinal cord injury/polytrauma department. Prior to the VA, I served as a counselor in an acute rehabilitation setting. I am honored to be leading the St. Louis VA Vocational Rehabilitation team. They are a group of highly skilled, dedicated clinicians. A few of my goals include to continue to expand vocational services in the St. Louis VA, launch the supported education program, and continue to see our team help more Veterans gain employment.
I value ideas and feedback. If you would like to talk with me about our services or an idea you think would benefit the Veterans we serve, please reach out to me.

What Veterans Who Are Homeless or At Risk For Homeless Should Do For Help
Local area Veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness are strongly encouraged to contact the HOPE Recovery Center at (314) 652-4100 ext. 55405 for assistance. If Veterans do not have access to a phone or the internet, then visit their closest VA medical center without calling in advance. VA also urges Veterans who are not homeless or at risk of homelessness to contact their VA medical center before visiting for any reason. These steps are necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
