Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to our September 2022 issue of Research Notables.  It has been a warm and busy summer and I hope you were all able to take some to relax with your family and friends.  Our summer kicked off in May with National VA Research Week.  We were honored to host Dr. Rachel Ramoni, VA Chief Research and Development Officer. During her visit to VA Providence, she met with several of our Career Development Awardees, as well as our COIN and CfNN Center Directors, and presented at our main Research Week event, ORD’s plans to enable VA Research to operate as a Research Enterprise.  Dr. Ramoni was also interviewed by Barbara Morse from NBC10 during her visit to the new Harwood Research Building.  To see the full story visit: National Veterans Affairs Chief of Research and Development visits Providence | WJAR (turnto10.com)

Please join me in congratulating our colleagues highlighted in this issue.  Thank you for all you do in service of our Veterans.

Sincerely,

Gaurav Choudhary, MD

Associate Chief of Staff (Research)

Providence VA Research News

The Providence Journal recently featured Researcher and Primary Care Physician, Alicia Cohen, MD. Dr. Cohen is a family physician and health-services researcher at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her research examines the links between not getting enough to eat and poor health. She goes further: How can the VA best address the needs of veterans who find it difficult to put food on the table for their families? How can the VA better identify community resources to help address this issue?

Early findings from her work have been cited in congressional testimony on veterans and military hunger. Last month, her work was recognized nationally when she was named a recipient of a prestigious fellowship from the National Academy of Medicine. A link to the full article: Providence VA physician studies effects of malnutrition among veterans (providencejournal.com)

Dr. Jennifer Sullivan was recently accepted to participate as an implementation scholar in the newly established Outcomes to Military Implementation Scholars Program (OMISP) funded by the Military Suicide Research Consortium. The goal of this nine-month training program is to build on expertise of three groups: suicide prevention researchers, implementation, and military partners. Nine Scholars Teams will be created in May 2022 and participate in the training program which results in creation of fundable proposals to implement and evaluate suicide EBPs in military settings.

Dr. Amal Trivedi, a researcher at the Providence VA, and the lead author of "Impact of VA Disability and Health Benefits on Long-Term Diabetes Outcomes among Vietnam-Era Veterans"  published in the Journal of the American Medical Association was featured on NBC10 WJAR in July 2022. https://turnto10.com/features/health-landing-page/providence-va-research-on-importance-of-disability-benefits-for-qualifying-veterans
