Program Description:
Culture identity factors— including race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, military experience and much more—play a significant role in vulnerability to, experience of, and recovery from mental illness. Many Veterans hold multiple identities simultaneously that influence their conceptualizations of and preferences for the treatment and recovery process. Ethically sound approaches to mental health services prioritize cultural competence (awareness, knowledge, and skills) as well as cultural humility. VHA providers seeking to deliver culturally responsive services and person-centered care for Veterans may benefit from regularly incorporating discussions about cultural identity during care, to inform and improve care. An overview of leading self-report and clinician-administered assessments of culture for use in clinical settings will be provided, followed by an introduction to the Cultural Identity Assessment, including its development, use, and ongoing evaluation. Attendees will learn to use the Cultural Identity Assessment, a brief provider guide to initiating conversations about cultural identity factors relevant for a given clinical care setting, as well as stressful experiences related to cultural identity and strengths related to identity.
