Everyone's Journey is Different

The National Center for PTSD wants to help you make informed choices regarding PTSD treatment plans.

There are multiple different treatment options for PTSD. Research shows that evidence-based trauma therapies are the most effective. Watch this video to see the different options for evidence-based trauma therapies.

These three types of therapy are the most effective.

  1. Prolonged Exposure (PE) - In PE, you work with your therapist to identify the thoughts, feelings, and situations that make you anxious or afraid. Then you confront those thoughts, feelings, and situations by talking about them and going out into the real world to experience them.
  2. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) - After a trauma, it’s common to get "stuck" on negative thoughts — like thinking what happened is your fault or that the world is very dangerous. CPT helps you move forward by teaching you how to make sense of your thoughts about trauma.
  3. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) - In EMDR, you work with your therapist to process your trauma and make sense of what happened by choosing a specific memory and paying attention to it while focusing on a back-and-forth movement.
