VA’s top clinical priority is preventing suicide among all Veterans, including those who do not, and may never, seek care within the VA health care system. It is also a major public health concern. Between 2001 and 2019 alone, over 6,000 Veterans died by suicide.
Suicide is complex — there is no single cause. There are a number of factors that increase or decrease the risk for suicide. Research has also identified warning signs to help in recognizing someone at risk for suicide.
As a community provider, you can gain key data and the latest research updates on Veteran Suicide by registering in VHA TRAIN for the Preventing Suicide Through Lethal Means Safety & Safety Planning self-paced, web-based training. Participants will learn about the purpose of Lethal Means Safety and Safety Planning for Suicide Prevention, including how to work with Veterans, their friends and family.
Community providers who interact with Veterans such as physicians, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, licensed professional counselors, chemical dependency counselors, psychologists and mental health providers can benefit from this recorded webinar and earn 1 CEU for the hour-long training.

At the end of each VHA TRAIN course, whether live or recorded (enduring content), is a VHA TRAIN course evaluation. To complete the course and earn any Continue Education Units (CEU), you must complete the associated training evaluation. The learning programs found in VHA TRAIN support the professional development needs of VA, public health and health care providers with a focus on Veteran centric care.
Your National Provider Identification (NPI), pulled from your VHA TRAIN profile, is the unique identifier used in VA’s Provider Profile Management System (PPMS) database to link courses you’ve completed in VA’s PPMS database. Certain provider training courses are tracked weekly and uploaded into VA’s PPMS database when finished:
Countdown to credits!
- Attending a live training? You have 30 days to complete the End of Corse Evaluation to receive credit.
- Taking in a recorded training (enduring content)? The evaluation is available as long as VHA TRAIN offers the course.
Simply log into VHA TRAIN. Click “Your Learning,” then click on the course you attended and complete the associated evaluation. To add your NPI, log into VHA TRAIN and click your name at the top right of the VHA TRAIN screen. Click <Your Profile>, click “Professional License Number” and add your license number.
You learned it - and you can earn the credits by completing the End of Course Evaluations in VHA TRAIN!

On October 25, 2021, Release 14 of HSRM was made available to end users. The following features were introduced in the system:
- Added Limited Referral Search functionality, allowing providers to search on their Referral List by criteria such as Category of Care, Date Added (‘To’ and ‘From’), and Status. See Figure 1 to view the Referral Search screen as it appears in HSRM.
- Added Veteran Appointment Preference Question to referrals in Community Care Network (CCN) Regions 1-6 so that data may be captured for network adequacy. Providers in CCN Regions 1-6 now need to answer the following Yes/No question when scheduling a Veteran’s first appointment: Did the Veteran self-schedule their appointment or independently select this appointment time?
