Evidence-Informed Progress Through Process: Implementing a Process-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Approach in VHA

Karen O'Brien, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Substance Use Disorders Outpatient Services, South Texas VA Health Care System

San Antonio, TX

November 9, 2021
12:00pm – 1:00pm ET

Program Description:

This presentation will discuss the clinical implications of utilizing a process-based, cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach in combination with recovery-oriented group interventions. This blended approach can be an effective transdiagnostic treatment for veterans who present with complex trauma histories and meet criteria for more than one psychiatric diagnosis. These veterans may not always be the best fit for the interventions that have been designated as evidence-based psychotherapies by the Veterans Health Administration. Additionally, mental health care is shifting from a primary focus on diagnosis-specific manualized treatments towards a process-oriented approach to the treatment of core transdiagnostic problems. Establishing an evidence-base for process-based cognitive-behavioral therapy among the veteran population is both important and timely.
