Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer screening

Many Veterans delay colorectal cancer screening. Routine screening is important and the most effective way to reduce your risk of advanced colorectal cancer. Regular screenings are recommended beginning at age 45.

Did you know there is more than one way to screen for colorectal cancer? Columbus VA offers the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) which is a take-home collection kit and needs completed yearly.

If you are due for colorectal cancer screening and want to complete it at home, please contact your primary care nurse and ask for a FIT kit.

Diabetes Diagnosis

Did you know Columbus VA offers virtual diabetes management? Advanced Diabetic Comprehensive Care (ACDC) is a six-month program that includes bi-weekly phone calls with a registered nurse and medication review and adjustment by a clinical pharmacist.

The program begins with a virtual screening where Veterans are made aware of the six-month commitment, expected daily participation and required technology use.

The goal is to help Veterans with diabetes determine how to incorporate exercise, healthy eating and more water consumption in their daily lives.

Any Veteran with an A1C level above 8.5 is encouraged to participate in ACDC. If you would like more information please reach out to your primary care team.

Columbus VA Volunteer Margaret has been serving our Veterans for four years and most frequently volunteers in our oncology clinic. She helps stock supply carts for chemotherapy and other treatments, makes coffee, offers snacks/pillows/blankets to patients who are receiving treatment and tapes up waste containers for disposal. Most importantly, she is a comforting and familiar face to patients and family members who spend time in the clinic. If you would like to join Margaret and our 60+ other volunteers please visit our website or call 614-257-5493 for more information.
