Diabetes Support group
Every 3rd Thursday of the month @ 11:00 a.m.
Patients with diabetes are often challenged by the routine of managing their diabetes, and may experience both stress and medical problems that affect their ability to live a full, happy and healthy life.
This program brings Veterans who have diabetes together to support each other to achieve their personal lifetime goals.
The best part about this program is that it is absolutely FREE and you can be in the comfort of your own home attending a VVC (VA Video Connect) group meeting!

Diabetes Education Classes
Every other Friday @ 10:00 a.m.
Diabetes is a complex disease that requires daily self-management - making healthy food choices, staying physically active, monitoring your blood sugar and taking medications as prescribed.
Successful self-management will help you feel better and can reduce your chance of developing complications like heart disease, dental disease, eye disorders, kidney disease, nerve damage and more.
This educational program consists of 10 sessions and will be repeated throughout the year. Join for one session or for all 10 sessions as your schedule allows.
These classes are absolutely FREE and you can be in the comfort of your own home while learning how to manage your diabetes by joining our VVC (VA Video Connect) group sessions!

The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated every year. During the month of August the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention monthly topic is Get Recommended Immunizations: “Preventing the Flu Begins with You!” to highlight the importance of getting a flu shot.
Due to the challenges of COVID-19, it is more important than ever for our patients to get a flu shot in the coming months. Flu vaccine should be available after September 15th in most VHA facilities.
Remind Patients to Keep an Eye on Cholesterol
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease and heart attack. Remind your patients to have their cholesterol checked. Urge them to take steps to lower cholesterol if it is too high. Content from the Veterans Health Library (VHL) can help educate them about managing cholesterol:

Share Information About Eating Wisely
Healthy eating is a key way to maximize health and prevent chronic diseases. Encourage Veterans to eat wisely. Let them know that healthy eating options are available , even on a budget or with certain dietary restrictions. Share these tips from the Veterans Health Library (VHL):
Recipes to eat healthy. The VA Healthy Teaching Kitchen Program has compiled these recipes and cookbooks from across the country to give Veterans more ideas about how to eat wisely.

New VVC (VA Video Connect) group starting
Thursday August 26 from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
This group is 16 sessions focusing on nutrition and exercise behavioral changes. Evidence shows people who attend and use the information that will be provided will stop gaining weight and/or begin losing weight.

GROUP COUNSELING FOR TOBACCO CESSATION
WHY USE IT AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE
Group counseling is an intervention for tobacco treatment and can be combined with pharmacotherapy. When it comes to tobacco treatment, group counseling is more effective than less intensive interventions and can be particularly useful for individuals with comorbidities including mental health disorders and substance use disorders.

VA Black Hills Health Care System offers Telephone Lifestyle Coaching for Veterans who may choose to work on their health and wellbeing without having to come to the medical center.
To start the program, Veterans simply need to let their health care team know they would like to enroll and then be prepared to receive a call from their coach at a time they prefer.
