Program Description:

Veterans using VHA mental health services often struggle with how to navigate the stigmatization of mental health conditions and the questions of when, whether, and how to disclose their use of mental health services (to health providers, family, friends, employers, others). Veterans and others living with mental health conditions need assistance with strategies for thoughtfully navigating the issues of disclosure and stigma to best serve their needs and recovery. Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) was designed for this purpose and has research evidence and clinical-use evidence supporting its effectiveness. In 2017, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) designated HOP as an evidenced-based program, leading to the training of Peer Specialists and others to deliver HOP in the VA led by Dr. Andra as HOP-VA National Point of Contact. In 2018-2019, Dr. Lucksted led a national quality improvement project showing that HOP-VA is benefitting Veterans who take part. This live, virtual knowledge-based webinar will describe the implementation of the VHA HOP program and its evidence as a recovery-fostering intervention for Veterans with mental health conditions, as well as future steps in its development within VA. This training applies to all healthcare team members.
