May’s focus is:
Residential Settings and Nursing Homes
When receiving care or living at home is not an option there are Residential Setting and Nursing Home options that may meet the needs of older Veterans or those with extended care needs.
Residential settings include:
-
Community Residential Care (CRC) is for Veterans who do not need hospital or nursing home care but cannot live alone because of medical or psychiatric conditions. This type of care takes place in several settings – there are about 550 facilities like this across the country.
-
Medical Foster Homes are private homes in which a trained caregiver provides services to a few individuals. Some, but not all, residents are Veterans. VA inspects and approves all Medical Foster Homes.
-
Adult Family Homes (also called Adult Foster Homes) are places where Veterans can live in a rented room. They are private homes where a few residents (6 or less) rent rooms. The homes have shared common spaces and Veterans might share a bedroom and bathroom with another person. There is a trained caregiver on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. VA does not pay the Veteran’s rent but may pay for some services.
-
Assisted Living Facilities are places where Veterans can live in a rented room or apartment. There are some shared living spaces, like a dining room. In some facilities the Veteran could have their own kitchen or kitchenette. VA does not pay the Veteran’s rent but may pay for some services.
Nursing Home options include:
- A Community Living Center (CLC), which is a VA Nursing Home. There are over 100 Community Living Centers across the country. See this listing of the current VA Community Living Center Locations.
-
Community Nursing Homes are places where Veterans can live full time and receive skilled nursing care any time of day or night. VA contracts with community nursing homes to care for Veterans. The Community Nursing Home program is offered in many communities so Veterans can receive care near their homes and families.
-
State Veterans Homes are facilities that provide nursing home, domiciliary or adult day care. They are owned, operated and managed by state governments. VA does not manage State Veterans Homes and eligibility varies by state. State Veterans Homes are in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Some states have more than one State Veterans Homes. For a list of locations, visit https://www.nasvh.org/state-homes/statedir.cfm.
Some of the services listed under Home and Community Based Services at www.va.gov/Geriatrics, such as Palliative Care and Hospice Care can also be provided in Residential Settings and Nursing Homes.
