COVID-19 Vaccination Update

Out of an abundance of caution, the San Francisco VA Health Care System has temporarily paused administration of the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine based on CDC and FDA recommendations. This pause is due to a concern about possible rare side effects. Your safety is our top priority. For the CDC/FDA press release on this pause, please visit: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/joint-cdc-and-fda-statement-johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine.

All of our Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) were scheduled to offer the Janssen vaccine this week. However, due to the pause, those with appointments are being contacted and offered the Moderna vaccine instead.

Unfortunately, we have also needed to cancel our Saturday 4/17/21 COVID-19 vaccine clinics at the San Bruno and Santa Rosa CBOCs.

We are offering COVID-19 vaccines to all Veterans, their spouses, caregivers and CHAMPVA recipients.

Veterans enrolled in VA health care can call to request an appointment:

  • San Francisco VA Medical Center - Fort Miley Campus: (415) 750-2223
  • Downtown San Francisco: (415) 281-5100
  • San Bruno: (650) 615-6000
  • Santa Rosa: (707) 569-2300
  • Clearlake: (707) 995-7200
  • Ukiah: (707) 468-7700
  • Eureka: (707) 269-7500

Those individuals newly eligible under the SAVES LIVES Act can go to the Keep Me Informed tool to register and express interest in receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. Once registered, a scheduler will contact them to schedule an appointment.

Why should you consider getting the COVID-19 vaccine now?

A COVID-19 vaccine will help protect you, others and VA employees by lowering the risk of getting COVID-19. Vaccines will also slow the spread of the virus.

What else you need to know:

You will need to receive two doses of the Moderna vaccine, with the second dose scheduled 28 days after the initial dose.

After you receive the vaccine, it will still be important to continue wearing a mask in public, washing your hands, and staying at least 6 feet from others who don’t live in your household. It is our hope that a vaccine will help us all get through this pandemic together.
