February’s focus is: Health, Fitness and Rehabilitation for Older Veterans
The Geriatrics and Extended Care website has added new information about health, fitness and rehabilitation – important topics for older Veterans and Veterans of any age with extended care needs.
Health
Geriatric Evaluation is available to all enrolled Veterans who need it. This service helps Veterans whose circumstances are medically complex, and their caregivers, learn to manage and cope with both normal age-related changes in health and the more complex kinds of medical problems that may develop with aging; which are referred to as “Geriatric Syndromes.” Examples of these syndromes include hearing or vision problems, dementia and delirium.
Whole Health is a program for Veterans to support health and well-being, with courses to help you develop well-being skills, complete a Personal Health Inventory, and create your Personal Health Plan.
Fitness
Gerofit is a proven exercise program that promotes health and wellness for older Veterans. Gerofit is a great way for Veterans to stay active by using a variety of strength and aerobic exercises.
Rehabilitation
VA's Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Services is responsible for the national policies and programs for medical rehabilitation, prosthetic and sensory aids services that promote the health, independence and quality of life for Veterans with disabilities, such as:
