Welcome to our first issue of Research Notables for 2021!
While 2020 certainly posed unprecedented challenges for all of us, there is reason to be optimistic in this new year. Coronavirus vaccinations are underway for both VA employees and Veterans. As of early January, approximately 60 VA medical centers are involved in one or more COVID-19 clinical trials. The Providence VA is also part of a major national research initiative on COVID-19 therapeutics, the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) initiative. Dr. Jankowich, a staff pulmonary and critical care physician, and Dr. Menon, a staff infectious diseases’ physician, will serve as local site investigators for ACTIV-3, an inpatient trial of a monoclonal antibody.
Also, we were recently notified that a Cooperative Study Project “Basal Cell Carcinoma Chemoprevention Trial (B3C)” co-led by Dr. Martin A. Weinstock, chief of Dermatology Research at the Providence VA along with Dr. Robert Dellavalle, chief of Dermatology for the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, was approved. This is a six-year, $34 million trial, which will recruit more than 1600 participants at 17 VA medical centers and include male and female veterans at high risk for BCC. The VA Cooperative Studies Program is the Division of VA Research and Development that is responsible for the planning and conduct of large multicenter clinical trials and epidemiological studies in the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Providence VA is currently participating in two other trials led by Dr. Swift, Chief of Mental Health at Providence VA: CSP 2014 A Study Comparing Oral Buprenorphine and Injectable Buprenorphine for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (VA-BRAVE) and CSP 2016 National Adaptive Trial for PTSD Related Insomnia (NAP).
