Dear Colleagues,
This was a year like no other! Despite personal and professional hardships, we saw a number of achievements this year. Whether it was for sustaining research operations, keeping our study subjects safe and engaged, or generating new knowledge, our staff and investigators showed enormous resilience and perseverance. I am honored to be part of this team.
The highlights of this year included us quickly ramping up and participating in COVID-19 related studies. Currently, an inpatient clinical trial is looking at role of Sarilumab in COVID19 led at our site by Dr. Nishant Shah and Dr. Matthew Jankowich. The health services group and COIN-LTSS led by Dr. James Rudolph and Dr. Stefan Gravenstein, developed and deployed a dashboard for all VA Community Living Centers to monitor and track residents’ temperature and identify early signs of SARS-CoV2 infection. The results from that analyses helped CDC modify temperature thresholds for nursing home residents. This year, we also had the opportunity to showcase the cutting edge research happening in suicide prevention by Dr. Jennifer Primack and Dr. Jennifer Barredo from the Suicide Prevention Research Innovation Group, Dr. Rudolph from COIN-LTSS, and Dr. Leigh Hochberg, Dr. Noah Philip and Dr. Mascha Frank from CfNN to Secretary Wilkie and Deputy Secretary Powers. Overall, Providence VA investigators published over 245 manuscripts and were awarded 28 new grants in 2020. We also welcomed three new Career Development Awardees to the Research Service this year: Dr. Alicia Cohen (Primary Care Physician. HSR&D), Dr. David Lin (Neurologist, Rehab R&D) and Dr. Sebhat Erqou (Cardiologist, HSR&D).
You can find details of our research programs and ongoing projects at our newly updated website https://www.providence.va.gov/research/
I thank everyone in the Research Service for their dedication to our mission to improve lives of Veterans through research. I wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
Sincerely,
Gaurav Choudhary, MD Associate Chief of Staff (Research) https://twitter.com/GChoudharyMD

SPRING Program Updates
Multiple SPRING members presented a panel regarding challenges and recommendations for conducting research with patients who are at high-risk for suicide across multiple settings (i.e., VA, correctional facilities, psychiatric inpatient units) at the Association for Behavior and Cognitive Therapies conference in November 2020.
Grants and Awards
SPRING members Melanie Bozzay, Ph.D. and Michael Armey, Ph.D. were awarded a $2.2M R01 Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health that leverages ecological momentary assessment, actigraphy, and laboratory-based tasks to examine proximal risk factors for suicide.
Melanie Bozzay, PhD, will receive $97,628 for the first funding year (out of 4) from the National Institute of Mental Health for “Dynamic Impacts of Sleep Disruption on Ecologically Assessed Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive Risk Factors for Suicide”
Gaurav Choudhary, MD, will receive a grant which is incrementally funded over 6 years from National Institute on Aging for “Pragmatic Evaluation of events and Benefits of Lipid-lowering in older Adults (PREVENTABLE)”
Sebhat Erqou, MD, PhD, will receive $477,982 over 2 years from the VISN 1- Career Development Award for "Improving quality of cardiovascular care in Veterans living with human immunodeficiency virus infection"
