Evaluating Use of Peer Support Specialists to Deliver Cognitive Behavioral Social Skills Training
Matthew Chinman, Ph.D.
Health Science Specialist Pittsburgh VAMC
October 13, 2020 12:00pm – 1:00pm ET
Program Description:
This live, virtual, knowledge-based webinar will describe a randomized trial testing two novel ways to improve functioning and recovery among Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI).The study is adapting two evidence-based interventions to be delivered by Peer Specialists—Veterans with SMI trained to use their own experience and recovery to help other Veterans with SMI. The first is from cognitive-behavioral therapy and the second focuses on social skills. The project will compare outcomes of Veterans with SMI receiving either intervention and standard care to outcomes of similar Veterans only receiving standard care. This work is responsive to national calls for Veterans with SMI to receive support that is evidence-based, improves functioning (not just symptoms), and is tailored to individual needs. Given that Veterans who have SMI occupy more hospital beds than any other set of illnesses, this novel intervention could have far-reaching impact for Veterans’ health care, as it could be easily adopted by the nearly 1100 Peer Specialists currently working in VA. This training applies to healthcare team members.
