Series Description:
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the major disorders seen in Veteran patients by VHA clinicians. New information and recommendations must be communicated to all health care providers to keep up with the continuous updates in this field. With this knowledge-based monthly teleconference series, experts will provide VHA staff with various approaches to treatment and other relevant information regarding PTSD.
Lecture Description:
Purpose Statement:
About 60% of men and 50% of women experience at least one
traumatic event. Of those who experience trauma, about 8% of men and 20% of
women will develop PTSD. For some events, like combat and sexual assault,
likelihood of developing PTSD is even higher. This lecture will provide an
overview of PTSD including diagnostic criteria and symptoms, prevalence,
course, comorbidities, and risk factors for civilian and Veteran populations.
It will review VA/DoD clinical practice guidelines for treating PTSD,
describe how the guidelines are set and how treatments are reviewed, and give
an overview of several evidence-based treatments for PTSD.
