VA Offers Flexible Work Hours
Flexible work schedules are becoming a cornerstone of many successful organizations, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Having signed the 4+1 Commitment, VA aims to help military spouses find and maintain meaningful employment. This includes allowing VA employees to break away from the traditional 9 to 5, 40-hour workweek without sacrificing the opportunities and benefits that come with job security.
Whether you have a doctor’s appointment in the middle of the day or need to pick your child up from daycare, having the flexibility to do so can improve your productivity and job satisfaction. It can also help military spouses feel supported while supporting their Service members.
Some types of flexible working arrangements include:
-
Flex time provides you with flexibility regarding the workday's start and end times. A flex-time schedule allows VA employees to arrive, for example, at 8:30 a.m. one day and 10:00 a.m. the next.
-
Compressed or condensed time allows you to work 40 hours in less than five days. A common example is a four-day working week of around 10 hours per day that gives you an extra day each week to attend to other commitments.
If you’re considering a VA career and flexibility it offers, the Department’s Veteran and Military Spouse Talent Engagement Program (VMSTEP) can help. VMSTEP provides:
- Federal resume support and revisions.
- Interview preparation and advice.
- Guidance on dressing for success.
- Assistance navigating the Federal Government’s official employment website USAJobs.
