Tax Season Reminders for Veterans
Are you preparing to file taxes? VA is here to help with some helpful reminders for Veterans and beneficiaries.
- VA benefits are tax free.
- There is no federal income tax on VA insurance proceeds
- Veterans with a service-connected disability rating may benefit from local property tax exemptions.
You may qualify for free assistance with filing from MilTax or IRS Free File.

Disability Housing Grants Available for Veterans
Veterans and service members with certain service-connected disabilities can receive housing grants from VA to buy, build, or modify a home to meet their needs and live more independently. Changes to your home may involve installing ramps, widening doorways, and more. Find out if you’re eligible for a disability housing grant and how to apply.

Education Benefits for Survivors & Dependents
If you’re the child or spouse of a Veteran or service member who has died, is captured or missing, or is rated permanently and totally disabled, you may be able to get help paying for school or job training through the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program, also called Chapter 35.
