It may not be a surprise to you that western PA is packed with several hundred resources for veterans, guard, reservists, and even our spouses and family members. There is no shortage of discounts and no cost opportunities year-round from organizations wanting to serve our military affiliated families. Not sure? Just ask PA Serves (1-855-838-7744). However, you may also have learned that not every organization is created equal in effectiveness. Metrics do matter, and so does integrity, professionalism, and authenticity.  

Overall, is it them or us? Do we truly know how to make the most of the services we’ve encountered? Honestly, I can say that those I’ve watched dip their toes into the waters of services out there have made a less than strategic effort. They’ve begun swimming in a puddle or trying to tread water in a strong river – both less than ideal approaches for the given situation. I believe the reason is a combination between the lack of mission clarity from the organization while simultaneous lack of understanding or goal definition by the person being served.

So how can a veteran, you and I alike, increase our potential use and effectiveness of services? Below are some general tips and traits that many of the successful opportunity seekers that I’ve seen possess, when seeking meaningful skills matches and livable wage opportunities with the career services that CASY (Corporate America Supports You) offers. Each veteran, guard, reservist, or spouse that embraces these approaches, or even a few of these methods, typically achieve success in various ways more so than their less engaged peers. I have heard similar reflections from other service organizations, academic institutions, and even employers. Although general, these are tangible ways you can contribute to your own success now:

  •   Ask questions & clarify the process.
    •  Take ownership of your own agenda. Get to know the service and aimed outcome anticipated when working with the organization.
    •  Find out what services they do and do not provide and if there are complimentary organizations that you can engage with as you move toward your goals.
  • Be teachable.
    • Know that the person who is serving you does this day in and day out. Give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove themselves incompetent of the role.
    • By practicing being teachable, it develops a balance between confidence you have in your abilities and the humility of allowing yourself to be led, and becoming a cooperative member of a team.
  • Prepare, do the homework.
    • Read the emails you receive and follow the steps given in a timely manner. Your pace is likely their pace.
    • If you discuss a certain topic, website, contact, etc on a phone call or at an appointment and it is identified as valuable to the goal you are working on, take the initiative to do your reading or connecting before the next time you touch base with your organization point of contact. Don’t wait for them to do the work for you. More than likely, they’re waiting for you to take ownership of your own growth goal in order to provide another nugget of wisdom or service.

As you can see, success comes from applying small investments of time and energy to those organizations who already have successful metrics. Using these tools exhibit the willingness to partner with a team that wants you to succeed. The organization has already developed the path, they are asking that you take ownership in your desired destination and engage in the process. Use resources wisely from this point forward and enjoy the team that may become ‘your people.’ Don’t worry – we all need people; it just takes a minute and a little effort to find them.

Telecounseling

As part of the VR&E modernization and transformation efforts, tele-counseling is now offered as another option for you to receive services. You may now request tele-counseling for your initial appointment as well as follow up appointments throughout your participation in the program.

This allows you to effectively communicate with your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) without traveling to the Regional Office or out based locations. You will only a webcam in your computer or mobile device to use this option. If you are interested in tele-counseling, please contact your VRC. Your VRC will work with you to schedule an appointment and will send a link to you to access the meeting.

Whether you’re just getting out of the service or you’ve been a civilian for years now, the VA Welcome Kit can help guide you to the benefits and services you’ve earned.

Based on where you are in life, your VA benefits and services can support you in different ways. Keep your welcome kit handy so you can turn to it throughout your life—like when it’s time to go to school, get a job, buy a house, get health care, retire, or make plans for your care as you age.
