 Greetings School Certifying Officials,
Are you getting questions from your GI Bill students pertaining to the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) letters they received in the mail? We have the answers in the form of pre-written materials to guide your communication with students.
As you know, on December 1, 2019, VA began processing MHA in accordance with the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2017, which enhances and expands the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. All GI Bill students who received an MHA payment between August 1, 2018, and December 1, 2019, were sent a letter in December informing them about the implementation and how it may impact their MHA.
To support communication efforts, we created a MHA Change Letter Toolkit with pre-written materials for you to use in your correspondence with students, including:
We encourage you to use these prepared materials to help answer GI Bill students’ questions. These materials provide more clarity regarding MHA updates and the impact they may have on students. If you have questions, reach out to us at ForeverGIBill.vbavaco@va.gov.
For students receiving a decrease in benefits, VA understands the impact and is working with students to provide one-time relief to help them adjust to the changes. Students can apply for the one-time relief in three ways: online (recommended), by phone or by mail. Students can find the Housing Relief Request form and details on how to apply at https://benefits.va.gov/gibill/fgibsummaries.asp#MHARelief.
We will continue to keep you informed and we appreciate your continued support of GI Bill students.
Respectfully,
Education Service
