Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
This May, VA joins the Nation in observing Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. This year’s theme is “Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity” and addresses, “the foundation of our great Nation and thus America is known to be the land of opportunity...Through providing advancement opportunities, organizations can reduce the barriers to professional progression and consequently reduce employee turnover and increase satisfaction. A successful organization invests in its employees’ professional development by providing opportunities that enable the employees to refine their skills and enhance their leadership abilities” (Federal Asian Pacific American Council).
As of March 2023, AANHPIs represent 5.31% of the Relevant Civilian Labor Force and 9.67% of VA employees (43,054 employees). This is an increase of over 5,300 employees from fiscal year 2020. AANHPIs make up 4.66% (5,768 employees) of the 123,647 Veterans employed by the VA. “Generations of Asian-Pacific Americans have proudly served our nation with honor and courage in wars and conflicts, including most recently in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Today, as in the past, their dedication and service to advancing peace in a troubled world upholds the values that make our country strong” (U.S. Army).
On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. EST ORMDI Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) Harvey Johnson will provide an overview of the essential developmental steps, experiences, and skills one needs if he/she aspires to one day qualify for a Senior Executive Service (SES) position in the Federal Government.
This event is being sponsored by ORMDI's Mentoring Program and is intended exclusively for ORMDI employees. To ensure participants have the best possible experience and training objectives are achieved, please do not forward this invitation outside ORMDI. Thank you.
Grace Hodge, a VA South Central Appalachian Network for Research Development (SCAN-RD) Summer Research Program (SRP) participant, has found her passion through VA. As someone living with Cystic Fibrosis, Grace has grown up with a near constant reminder of the fragile nature of health and an awareness of how a life-long illness can impact every aspect of her day-to-day activities. By participating in VA SCAN-RD’s Summer Research Program, Grace received twelve weeks of training in the Summer of 2022 where she learned basic research concepts and received expert mentoring from VA researcher, Dr. Miranda Orr.

Travelers:
If you’re planning to travel, the ORMDI Travel and Timekeeping Team has updated the "POV vs. TNC Cost Comparison" to make it user-friendly. Also, Travelers are required to submit their travel voucher within five days of returning. When you submit your voucher, please check when you've received payment, as there have been some delayed payments due to the new VA budget iFAMS system. Additional information can be found on the new " ORMDI Travel Policy Memorandum," dated March 13, 2023.
Management Services has recently deployed the CT/OT application using the E2 platform. It's the same process, but it's been automated and no longer requires digital signatures using Adobe. This is a reminder that CT/OT should be submitted no later than two weeks from the requested date for approval, as the system doesn't allow for retroactive submission. Link to access the request: CT/OT Request Dashboard - Dynamics 365.
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers employment verification through The Work Number. The Work Number verifies your status to third-party requestors using personally identifiable information from The Department of Veterans Affairs. ORMDI employees who need their employment status or income verified by a third party for mortgages, personal loan applications, housing applications, etc., can refer the requestor to The Work Number using the VA company code 10208.
Senior Executive Assessment Program
Do your career plans include the Senior Executive Service (SES)? Would you like to determine your SES potential or reach a senior SES position? The Senior Executive Assessment Program (SEAP) is an intensive, five-day program that gauges your SES performance potential and determines your readiness to go through the SES selection process (including interviewing and obtaining SES certification). This session will provide a realistic job preview of what life in the SES is like so you can make an informed decision about whether it is the right career path for you. Using a behavioral Assessment Center (AC), SEAP provides a real-time (observed) assessment of Executive Core Qualifications (ECQ) performance. The AC features a ratio of one assessor for every two participants, as well as multiple opportunities to perform on critical SES competencies. This program provides a comfortable, secure environment in which to appraise your SES potential and then develop a tailored action plan for leadership development at the SES level. When you exit the program, you’ll receive a confidential debrief on your performance.
