Commemorate
29th Annual Federal Inter-Agency Holocaust Remembrance Program
Join VA for the 29th Annual Federal Inter-Agency Holocaust Remembrance Program, “Courage Facing Evil,” to be held virtually on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah, Thursday, April 28, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (ET). From the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the largest uprising by Jews during World War II and the first significant urban revolt against German occupation in Europe. The uprising began after German troops and police entered the ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants. Jewish insurgents inside the ghetto resisted these efforts. In the United States, Days of Remembrance runs from the Sunday before Yom HaShoah through the following Sunday.
This year’s Federal Inter-Agency Holocaust Remembrance Program will feature two Holocaust Survivors, Rachel Goldfarb and Susan Warsinger, both of whom have served as long-term volunteers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Rachel (Rae) Mutterperl Goldfarb was born in Dokszyce, Poland, in 1930. She and her family were forced to live in a ghetto before escaping and going into hiding with Gentiles. After her brother was denounced and killed, Rae and her mother joined a group of partisan fighters with whom they remained until liberation in 1944.
In November 1938, the Nazis destroyed Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues in an event known as Kristallnacht—the “Night of Broken Glass.” Susan Warsinger was an eyewitness to that terrifying event.
The program will be moderated by Edna Friedberg, Historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
To watch the virtual event, visit the Federal Inter-Agency Holocaust Remembrance Program website. For more information, contact Mr. Ronald Piaseczny, Office of Resolution Management, Diversity and Inclusion, VA’s representative coordinating the Federal Inter-Agency Holocaust Remembrance Program.

Stephanie Bonilla
Pacific District’s Administrative Officer
Stephanie Bonilla currently serves as the Administrative Officer for the ORMDI Pacific District Office. Stephanie is being recognized for her outstanding work overseeing the renovations and furniture installation which took place during the pandemic. While most other ORMDI employees worked from home full-time, Stephanie visited the Greater Los Angeles (GLA) campus each week to get updates from contractors, take photos, place work orders, arranged meetings with contractors, and GLA plumbers, interior design, and electricians. At one point in the project, the furniture installation hit a snag which could have jeopardized the timely installation of furniture. Stephanie quickly coordinated with Martha Young, ORMDI Program Analyst, GLA Interior Design, and the furniture contractor. Her timely and immediate response ensured the furniture was received on time and installed by the deadline. While COVID-19 was at its highest levels in Los Angeles, Stephanie went over and above (taking the necessary safety precautions) to oversee the entire renovation project. Stephanie earned her certification as a Contract Officers Representative, and she is ready to oversee the second half of the renovation project. Due to her dedication and commitment to the project, ORMDI staff in the Los Angeles Office are returning to a new office space. When an employee saw the new space for the first time, she commented on just how beautiful the workplace and her office looked.

Emergency Alerting and Accountability System (VA EAAS) Testing
VA Directive 0325 requires regular testing of the VA Emergency Alerting and Accountability System (VA EAAS). Accordingly, the Human Capital Services Center (HCSC) will conduct an alert exercise with ORMDI. VA EAAS is VA’s primary emergency notification system of record to generate alerting to employees, gain awareness of personnel safety status and provide assistance if needed. The testing is designed to validate the functions of the system, such as confirmation that messages can be sent and are received on all devices. Furthermore, this testing also ensures the readiness of staff members to respond to VA EAAS notifications and operate effectively during times of a real world event.
On 14 April, you will receive an alert(s) with an after-hours test on 21 April, via one or more of the following methods:
- Desktop Pop-up notification via your VA computer;
- Mobile Application via your VA or personal cell phone;
- SMS Text messages via your VA or personal cell phone;
- Email alerts via your VA inbox; or
- Phone calls via your VA work cell, personal cell or home number.
What you should do after you receive a notification?
The alert(s) will include a request to provide a response to one or more options. To respond to an alert, simply reply with the number of the appropriate response. For the mobile app, tap the option on your mobile screen. Once you receive the alert(s), please read and/or listen to the message and respond accordingly through one device/delivery method. You DO NOT need to respond to multiple alert methods (ex. email alert response and response to SMS text alert).
If you have any questions about testing or issues with the alerts, please contact Nichole Scheel at Nichole.Scheel@va.gov.
