Born in November 1965 in Jacksonville, Florida, Suzanne Dubberly Speight enlisted in the Navy on Feb. 3, 1986, three years after graduating from Sandalwood High School. Following bootcamp at Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Florida, her first duty station was aboard the USS Prairie (AD-15). Speight’s entered the Naval Reserve on Feb. 1, 1991, with the Naval Broadcasting and Television Center in Bermuda. [From VA News]

This month’s Center for Women Veterans Book Corner author is Marine Corps Veteran Phoebe Sisk, who was the youngest of 12 children born to artist parents and who lost her mother to suicide at five. Envisioning a different future, Sisk graduated with honors from college and joined the Marine Corps with future husband Kevin, excelling in a left-brained male environment without compromising creativity or femininity. Sisk wrote “Letters from the Last Pope” for her children. [From VA News]
