“Slow down!” When I hear those words, I picture a young mother yelling at cars driving through her neighborhood while her children play. Imagine a very different scene. Imagine you are living your life, juggling all the chores and responsibilities, checking off your list, barely taking a breath or a moment to enjoy the day. Imagine somewhere deep inside, you hear a whisper, a gentle, quiet, urging to “slow down.” [From VA News]

Bay Pines VA provides various resources for Veterans experiencing homelessness with the understanding that each Veteran’s road to recovery is built differently. For Air Force Veteran Kerry Schmid, her path was paved with perseverance, dedication and selflessness. In April 2023, the Largo Elks Foundation donated a Welcome Home Starter Kit to Schmid, making her its 100th Veteran to receive assistance with a new beginning. [From VA News]

Meta Monteleon, a treasured resident at Dublin VA, passed away peacefully in her sleep May 3. She was 108. Monteleon served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII. After discharging in 1944, she continued with her nursing career for an additional 50 years. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living WWII nurse. [From VA News]

Many people don’t think twice about scheduling an appointment with a doctor. Their biggest barriers may be insurance concerns or finding the time for a visit. But what if you avoid seeking care because of historic attitudes toward your sexual orientation or gender identity? This is the situation many Veterans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or another minority orientation (LGBTQ+) face. [From VA News]

Born in December 1918 in Kittrell, North Carolina, Charity A. Earley was the oldest of four children. Raised in Columbia, South Carolina, by her father who was a minister and her mother, a former teacher, she excelled in school and became valedictorian at Booker T. Washington High School. After completing high school, she attended Wilberforce University of Ohio, where she studied Latin, math and physics. Upon graduating, she taught math at a local high school while working on a master’s degree in psychology at Ohio State University. [From VA News]

Army Veteran Susan struggled with gastrointestinal (GI) issues for years with no real answers and various diagnoses. After doing an eliminations diet and researching online, she talked to her primary care provider about the possibility of celiac disease. Follow up blood work and additional testing showed she did indeed have celiac disease. Susan was happy to finally have an answer to her discomfort and a manageable treatment plan. [From VA News]

Have you been exposed to a toxic substance during your service? If so, you may be eligible for VA benefits, even if you have been turned down in the past, and it is important for you to apply now. The PACT Act is a new law that expands VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances. [From VA News]

The demonstration begins with a pile of rocks, a pile of pebbles and a jar. The teacher pours the pebbles into the jar, which fills it up about halfway. She then tries to put the rocks in the jar, but they don’t all fit. The teacher takes everything out and starts again, but this time she puts the rocks in first. [From VA News]

This month’s author is a retired Army Reserve Veteran Col. Beverly Smith-Tillery, who served from 1988 to 2003 in the Army Reserve’s Nurse Corps and from 2004-2010, active, in the Army Nurse Corps. Smith-Tillery wrote “The Invisible Wounds of War, My Redemption,” where she discusses how going to war is a life-changing experience. [From VA News]
