Vietnam Era Veterans - New Disability Payments and Free Health Care Eligibility

You may be missing out on monthly disability payments and health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Eligibility for monthly disability benefits is time sensitive so you must act soon. VA has changed eligibility requirements, so even if you were previously denied, you may now be eligible.

Did you serve on active duty in any of these locations during these time periods?

  • The Republic of Vietnam between January 9, 1962 - May 7, 1975
  • Thailand at any U.S. or Royal Thai base between January 9, 1962 - June 30, 1976
  • Laos between December 1, 1965 - September 30, 1969
  • Cambodia at Mimot or Krek, Kampong Cham Province between April 16, 1969 - April 30, 1969
  • Guam or American Samoa (or their territorial waters) between January 9, 1962 - July 31, 1980
  • Johnston Atoll (or on a ship that called at Johnston Atoll) between January 1, 1972 - September 30, 1977
  • Enewetak Atoll between January 1, 1977 - December 31, 1980
  • Palomares, Spain between January 17, 1966 - March 31, 1967
  • Thule Air Force Base, Greenland between January 21 - September 25, 1968.

If so, you may be eligible for VA benefits and VA health care.

Thanks to the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022 law (the PACT Act), VA is expanding eligibility for VA health care and benefits for Veterans with possible toxic exposures. In addition, the PACT Act created a list of more than 20 presumptive disease categories and related conditions that are associated with military service exposure to burn pits and other toxins. As a result, Veterans are not required to prove they were exposed to Agent Orange in the first six locations listed or radiation in the final three listed locations to qualify for enrollment in VA health care.

There are four easy ways to apply for VA health care:

  1. Apply online at VA.gov/PACT
  2. Call VA’s toll-free hotline at 1-800-MyVA411 (1-800-698-2411)
  3. Mail a completed, signed Application for Health Benefits (VA.gov/find-forms/about-form-10-10ez/) to Health Eligibility Center, 2957 Clairmont Rd., Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30329
  4. Visit your nearest VA medical center or clinic (VA.gov/find-locations).

You may also submit a claim, or submit an intent to file a claim, for VA disability compensation benefits:

  1. Submit a claim online, learn more at VA.gov/disability/how-to-file-claim/
  2. Visit your nearest VA benefits office (VA.gov/find-locations).
  3. Call the VA benefits hotline at 1-800-827-1000.

For more information and to view a complete list of new presumptive conditions, please visit www.VA.gov/PACT. You can also call 1-800-MyVA411 and speak to a customer service representative.
