Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran Charles Young, who was the first African American Army soldier to reach the rank of colonel. Charles Young was born in May’s Lick, Kentucky, in 1864, during the Civil War. Young’s parents were slaves, but in 1865, his father escaped to Ohio to enlist with the 5th U.S. Colored Artillery. By serving with the Union Army, his father earned freedom for himself and his family, and they rejoined him in Ohio. [From VA News]

Alex Haley retired from the Coast Guard after 20 years in service, and he continued to pursue a career as a journalist. His first book, "The Autobiography of Malcom X," became an instant bestseller. [From VA News]

Today’s #VeteranOfTheDay is Army Veteran John Fujio Aiso, who served as a language instructor during World War II. John Fujio Aiso was born in Burbank, California, in 1909 to Japanese American parents. After graduating from Hollywood High School in 1926, he traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to study Japanese at Seijo University. [From VA News]
