Norman R. Smith grew up in the famous Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans. He was one of those children who knew what he wanted to do at a young age. Smith didn’t want to be a pilot or a police officer, or even a soldier. He wanted to be a historian. Specifically, he wanted to record and preserve black history. [From VAntage Point]

When you think of Soul Food, do you think of comfort foods served at family gatherings and holidays that bring feelings of home? Traditional African American comfort foods include homemade macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, red beans and rice, cornbread, seasoned greens, mashed potatoes and gravy, and ice-cold sweet tea. The Guam Veteran’s Affairs office announced beginning Feb. 15 and every third Friday it will be clearing Vets cemetery grave sites of flowers and decorative items. It’s in keeping with federal regulations regarding uniformity. [From Kuam News]

During its annual film showcase Feb. 23 in San Francisco’s Japantown, the Nichi Bei Foundation plans to present a series of short films on the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans. Entitled “Americanism is in the Heart,” the three films explore sacrifices some 120,000 people of Japanese descent made while incarcerated [From Nichi Bei]

This time last year, VA was getting ready to launch a nationwide campaign to roll out Veteran disability enrollment claim events with 24 tribal communities. The campaign, Your Service. The Cherokee Nation honored two military Veterans with the tribe’s Medal of Patriotism during the February Tribal Council meeting Monday. Gary D. Davis, 71, of Tahlequah; and Mary A. Gregory, 61, of Hulbert, were recognized by Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker and Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden, acknowledging their service and sacrifice to their country.
