In the Spotlight … Retreats and Fellowships for Women Veterans

Women Veterans face the same challenges as both civilian women and male Veterans, which can leave us feeling slightly out of place in many settings.  Recognizing that some of us benefit greatly from the opportunity to share, learn, and grow in the company of other military and Veteran women, some organizations and VA facilities are developing retreats and fellowships specifically tailored for our population.  Here’s a short selection of some of the programs available at the national, regional, and local level:

  • The Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University’s Focus Forward Fellowship is designed to help women Veteran students build skills, leadership, and a sense of community with their peers during a four-day residency followed by engagement with their cohort in an online learning community.
  • Military support Programs and Networks’ After Her Service program for Post 9/11 women Veterans seeks to support their personal and professional success through a skill-building retreat followed by six months of individual coaching focused on setting and attaining life and career goals.
  • The Mission Continues’ annual Women Veterans Leadership Summit brings together rising women Veteran leaders with women leaders from the business, philanthropy, entertainment, and political fields for three days of learning and connecting followed by a service project.
  • Women Veterans ROCK! is hosting a Professional Development Retreat for military and Veteran women at Chestnut Hill College in July.
  • Boulder Crest’s Warrior PATHH (Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes) is a non-clinical program designed to cultivate post-traumatic growth among Veterans with PTSD through an 18-month program that begins with a seven-day retreat; all-women cohorts take place.
  • CenterPoint Retreats are six-day retreats based on a model of experiential, body-centered, relationship-based healing that have served over 250 women; eligibility is for women OEF/OIF Veterans receiving Vet Center counseling.
  • VA medical centers around the country have hosted retreats for women Veterans over the years, including Northport VA Medical Center’s six-day Healing in Nature Retreats on Indian Lake; VA Black Hills Health Care System’s Women Veterans’ Retreat through their PTSD Outpatient Program; and VA Salt Lake City’s three-day retreat in the mountains of Park City.  Contact the Woman Veteran Program Manager at your local facility to learn whether there are any local programs – or to encourage them to start one!
