Does a Change to the Age Statement of My Whisky Require a New COLA?
If you are changing the age statement on your whisky (or other distilled spirits product), we have good news: Changing the age statement does not require a new Certificate of Label Approval (COLA).
Certain changes to product labels are allowed without obtainining a new COLA. Section V, Allowable Revisions to Approved Labels, of TTB Form 5100.31 lists all changes that are allowed to product labels covered by a COLA without having to obtain a new approval. Specifically, number 14 allows for a change of the mandatory age statement for whisky and other distilled spirits and for the removal or change of optional age statements. Keep in mind that these changes must not result in a change to the class or type designation, and supporting documentation for labeling claims must be made available upon request by TTB.
See 27 CFR 5.74 for further information about mandatory and optional age statements and minimum aging requirements applicable to certain classes and types of spirits.
