Type Size Requirement for Alcohol Content on Labels
Did you know that there are requirements for the type size of the alcohol content statement on alcohol beverage labels? A common mistake we see on label submissions is that the alcohol content appears in type size that is too small or too large. Wine containing 7% alcohol by volume or more and malt beverages have both a minimum and maximum type size allowed, and distilled spirits have a minimum type size allowed.
For example, the alcohol content statement on wine containers of 5 liters or less must be in type size of a minimum of 1 mm and a maximum of 3 mm. Different type size requirements apply for distilled spirits and malt beverages.
The type size requirements apply to each numeral, symbol, or letter in the statement, including both upper-case and lower-case letters. Every Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) is issued with a qualification that it is the responsibility of the COLA holder to ensure the label is in compliance with type size requirements.
Other required label elements have different type size requirements. See the Mandatory Information section on our Wine Labeling, Distilled Spirits Labeling, and Malt Beverage Labeling pages for the type size requirements for each piece of mandatory information.
