Frequently Asked Question: Can I Add a Website or QR Code to My Label Without Applying for a New COLA?
Allowable revisions to approved labels continue to be a hot topic at conferences, with many industry members wondering whether they can add their website or a quick-response (QR) code to a product label covered under an existing Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) without applying for a new COLA.
Good news! You do not need a new COLA if you are adding a website or QR code and not making other changes that would otherwise require a new COLA.
On TTB Form 5100.31, allowable revision number 23 enables COLA holders to add, delete, or change UPC barcodes and/or 2D mobile barcodes such as QR codes; and allowable revision number 24 enables COLA holders to add, delete, or change a website address, phone number, fax number, or ZIP code. These allowable revisions apply to labels for wine, distilled spirits, and malt beverages.
