6 Tips to Keep in Mind When Applying for a Wine Label COLA   

When applying for a certificate of label approval (COLA), your number one priority is making sure your labels meet the TTB requirements. But often, it’s not the label that causes a slowdown, but simple errors made when entering information about the label in COLAs Online.

6 Tips to Keep in Mind When Applying for a Wine Label COLA

1. If there is an appellation of origin on the label, for example Niagara County or Barossa Valley, make sure that you either select the correct location from the dropdown list (domestic) or enter it exactly as it appears on the label (imported).
2. Take care to enter the brand name of the wine exactly as it is spelled on the brand label.
3. If a grape varietal is used as the class/type designation on the brand label, you must either choose the correct name from the dropdown or accurately enter it.
4. If you are using a name other than the proper legal name of your business, for example a doing business as name (DBA), trade name, or fictitious business name, in the name and address statement on your label, be sure to either select it from the dropdown menu, or enter that name.

(Bonus tip: make sure you’ve added all of your trade names to your permit in Permits Online!)

5. If there is an organic claim on the label, remember to upload information supplied by the certifier/ACA (see Labeling Organic Wine).
6. If your label contains foreign text, provide the translation when you submit the application.

SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) includes the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service (CS), which assists and advocates for U.S. businesses in international markets to foster U.S. economic prosperity. Utilizing its network of trade promotion and policy professionals located in 79 countries and 106 U.S. locations, CS promotes U.S. exports, especially among small and medium-sized enterprises; advances and protects U.S. commercial interests overseas; and attracts inward investment into the United States. CS is seeking feedback from the general public—including businesses that are new to exporting or not currently exporting—on ways to modernize services for the 21st century. CS is reviewing its services to assess their effectiveness in meeting the needs of U.S. exporters and identify opportunities to innovate and enhance services offered, with the objective of driving U.S. innovation and global competitiveness by increasing U.S. exports and ensuring more U.S. regions benefit, as well as workers and businesses from underserved communities.
