TTB Establishes 4 American Viticultural Areas
This week we formally established the Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon; Rocky Reach; Paulsell Valley; and Upper Lake Valley American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).
Mount Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon
This approximately 5,850-acre AVA is located in Polk County, in Oregon. It is located within the boundaries of the existing Willamette Valley AVA. See Docket No. TTB–2020–0008 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
Rocky Reach
This approximately 50-square mile AVA is located in portions of Chelan and Douglas Counties, in Washington. It is located within the boundaries of the existing Columbia Valley AVA. See Docket No. TTB–2021–0006 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
Paulsell Valley
This 34,155-acre AVA is located in Stanislaus County, in California. It is not located within any existing AVA. See Docket No. TTB–2021–0005 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
Upper Lake Valley and Modification of Clear Lake AVA Boundary
This approximately 17,360-acre AVA is located in Lake County, in California. The final rule also modifies the boundaries of the existing Clear Lake AVA so that the Upper Lake Valley AVA is entirely within it. Both the Upper Lake Valley and Clear Lake AVAs are located within the existing North Coast AVA. See Docket No. TTB–2021–0001 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
Bottlers who wish to label their wines with new AVAs as appellations of origin must obtain a new Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) for the label, even if the currently approved label already contains another AVA appellation of origin. The same is true for bottlers wishing to use “Clear Lake” as an appellation of origin on wines made primarily from grapes grown in the newly added region.
Please do not submit COLA applications for labels using the new AVAs until July 5, 2022, the effective date of these final rules.
