Establishment of San Luis Obispo Coast and Expansion of Clarksburg AVAs
This week we formally established the San Luis Obispo Coast (SLO Coast) American Viticultural Areas (AVA) and expanded the boundary of the established Clarksburg AVA.
San Luis Obispo Coast (SLO Coast): This approximately 408,505-acre AVA is sited in San Luis Obispo County, in California. It is located within the boundaries of the existing Central Coast AVA and entirely encompasses the existing Arroyo Grande Valley and Edna Valley AVAs. See Docket No. TTB–2020–0009 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
Clarksburg AVA Expansion: The existing Clarksburg AVA is located in portions of Yolo, Solano, and Sacramento Counties, in California. The expansion adds 27,945-acres of land to the AVA. See Docket No. TTB–2020–0013 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
Bottlers who wish to label their wines with new AVAs as appellations of origin must obtain a new Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) for the label, even if the currently approved label already contains another AVA appellation of origin. The same is true for bottlers wishing to use “Clarksburg” as an appellation of origin on wines made primarily from grapes grown in the newly-added region.
Please do not submit COLA applications for labels using the new AVAs until April 8, the effective date of both final rules.
