Optional Roth in-plan conversions available January 28 to all participants
Starting January 28, 2026, you’ll have the option to convert money in your traditional (pre-tax) balance to your Roth (after-tax) balance in your TSP account.
Roth in-plan conversions are available to all TSP participants:
- Active participants (current federal civilian employees and uniformed services members)
- Separated and retired participants
- Spouse beneficiary participants
You don’t have to have a Roth TSP balance to do a Roth in-plan conversion. If you don’t have a Roth TSP balance, your first Roth in-plan conversion will create one in your TSP account.
If you’re considering doing a Roth in-plan conversion, we strongly recommend that you consult a tax advisor. When you convert pre-tax money from your traditional TSP balance, your Roth in-plan conversion amount becomes part of your taxable income for the year. This means that you’ll pay income tax on the conversion amount based on your income tax rate. You must pay the income tax on the conversion amount using personal funds from another source, such as a savings account. You cannot use part of the amount you’re converting to pay taxes.

For some, catch-up contributions must be Roth
If you’re age 50 or older and made more than $150,000 in wages last year from a TSP‑eligible job, any catch‑up contributions you make this year must go into your Roth TSP balance. You don’t need to do anything to meet this requirement. If the requirement applies to you, your payroll office will automatically designate your catch-up contributions as Roth.
You can find more details and a few example scenarios on our website to help you figure out whether this rule applies to you.

Thank you for more than 50,000 comments on TSP education emails!
You may have noticed this year that we started asking for feedback on our education emails through a short survey where you can submit comments or questions. We received more than 50,000 responses, and we’re truly grateful to every TSP participant who took a moment to share their thoughts. Your feedback matters even more than you might realize.
Even one comment holds a lot of power. Your feedback has helped us:
- Spot confusing language we can simplify on the website and in future emails.
- Add example scenarios to publications to explain topics more clearly.
- Clarify steps to take to find account information or complete transactions.
- Better explain why a topic matters to specific audiences and at different stages of life.
- Identify patterns in comments and suggestions that guide future communications.
Thank you for speaking up. One comment at a time, you help us make TSP communications clearer, more helpful, and more responsive to the needs of all TSP participants.
