2023 participant insights
With our mission to administer the TSP solely in the interest of participants and beneficiaries, it’s important that we know what interests you. We’re grateful for the engagement and feedback we receive from TSP participants throughout the year, and we’d like to share some insights from 2023 with you.

You're match-tastic!
In 2023, more TSP participants than ever contributed at least 5% of their pay to receive the full 5% match.

More than a third of participants contribute after-tax money to a Roth TSP balance. |

For active employees contributing to the TSP:
Did you know that you can contribute to both your Roth TSP balance and to a Roth IRA?
A Roth IRA is an individual retirement account that you would manage outside the TSP. Eligibility, contribution limits, and rules are different. This means that contributing to a Roth IRA doesn’t affect your ability to contribute to your Roth TSP balance up to the IRS contribution limits that apply to the TSP.
If you have questions about the differences, you can find out more about IRAs on the IRS website or speak with a qualified financial advisor.
For separated employees taking RMDs:
Did you know that your Roth TSP balance is no longer subject to RMDs?
Beginning in 2024, RMD calculations will include only the traditional balance, and only distributions from the traditional balance will count toward satisfying the RMD amount. Distributions of Roth money won’t count toward satisfying your RMD because Roth money in your account isn’t subject to RMDs.
This is one of several changes related to the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act of 2022 (SECURE 2.0).

Know before you go
When you leave federal employment or uniformed services, you can keep your TSP account. Keep in mind that participating in the nation’s largest retirement plan means your TSP account may be an easy target for financial professionals who would benefit financially from managing your retirement investments.
If you’re considering moving your TSP savings, be prepared to ask the right questions and compare fees and investment funds before making a decision that you can't undo. You can keep money in your TSP account forever, but once you’re gone, you’re gone.
Use our scorecard to keep track of how the TSP compares to other options.
