Our program plan lets you read about how we're keeping an eye on the tax system. It lists nearly 100 ongoing or planned audits, inspections, and evaluations, and each covers a major challenge we think the IRS faces.
How do we choose what to look at?
We conduct a strategic planning process that identifies high-risk or emerging issues impacting federal tax administration and the IRS. We adjust our program plan accordingly to respond to Congressional requests or new issues.
Our plan is a mix of discretionary and required reviews. We consider several factors when selecting which areas of IRS programs and operations to review. For example, we consider:
- Referrals from our Office of Investigations.
- Concerns from IRS employees and tax practitioners.
- Findings from previous work.
- Requests made by Congress.
- Input from IRS and Treasury Department leadership.
