South Carolina continues its commitment to supporting military-connected children with the proclamation of April as the "Month of the Military Child." On March 25th, Governor Henry McMaster, along with key state leaders, gathered to honor these children for their service, sacrifice, and resilience. The state currently has 15 Purple Star School Districts and six Purple Star Schools, which provide critical support to military families. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Laurens, SC native and Air Force Veteran Barney Jene Blackwell, who was laid to rest on March 23rd. Known for his dedication to Veterans, Blackwell served as the Laurens County Veterans Affairs Officer and as Deputy Director of the South Carolina Division of Veterans' Affairs during the Sanford Administration.
