RESTORE Council Funded Trail Expansion Opens at Gulf State Park, Gulf Shores, AL
Alabama State Parks has officially completed a 4.4-mile expansion of the Fort Morgan Trail at Gulf State Park. The $5.6 million infrastructure upgrade was made possible through funding awarded by the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council (RESTORE Council).
Established by federal law following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the RESTORE Council is an independent federal entity composed of governors from the five Gulf Coast states and cabinet-level federal officials. The Council is tasked with directing administrative and civil penalties paid under the Clean Water Act into environmental restoration and economic enhancement projects across the region. The project was identified for RESTORE Act Spill Impact Component funding by the Alabama Gulf Coast Recovery Council.
Local leadership, state park staff, and community members marked the completion of the RESTORE Council-funded project during a late August ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new section stretches westward from Plantation Boulevard to a terminus near Fort Morgan Pizza, bringing the continuous, paved Fort Morgan Trail to 10.5 miles along Fort Morgan Road.
