Former USPTO Deputy Director Laura Peter nominated for role at the World Intellectual Property Organization
America's Innovation Agency, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), congratulates Laura Peter on her nomination for the role of Deputy Director General (DDG) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s Patents and Technology Sector. From 2018 to 2021, Ms. Peter was the Deputy Under Secretary for Commerce and Deputy Director of the USPTO. Currently, she is the Executive Director of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Office of Research Commercialization and Partnerships.
Ms. Peter’s appointment to the DDG position is subject to approval by WIPO's Coordination Committee. The Coordination Committee will convene on July 9, 2026, to discuss all nominations during the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO. Once the Coordination Committee approves Ms. Peter’s nomination, her six-year term will commence on October 1, 2026. She will be responsible for administering the Patent Cooperation Treaty and WIPO’s programs related to intellectual property protections for technologies.
A USPTO delegation, led by Director John A. Squires, will represent the United States July 7-15 at WIPO’s 2026 Assemblies of the Member States, where they will participate in discussions that assess WIPO’s current work and set future policy direction.
The USPTO enthusiastically looks forward to the Coordination Committee approving Ms. Peter’s nomination next week and working with her to promote the interests of IP rights holders around the world.
