New serial number series begins for applications
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)’s trademark serial number system provides an eight-digit unique identifier for every trademark application. Over the years, we’ve usually assigned numbers in ascending order. However, with applications now starting with the 99-series, you may be wondering what happens next. On July 18, 2026, the USPTO will begin issuing a new range of serial numbers for applications filed under sections 1 or 44 of the Trademark Act.
The new series will:
- Start with “50”
- Continue to be eight digits total
- Remain as the unique digital identifier for each application
Applications and records with a special series designation will not be affected by this change. For example, extensions of protection under the Madrid Protocol will still begin with “79.”
An application’s filing date and time should be used to determine priority.
If you have any docketing software, internal systems, or processes that rely on serial numbers beginning with a particular number sequence, you may need to review them to ensure they function correctly after the new series begins.
Looking ahead
At America’s Branding Agency, we're retaining the familiar eight-digit serial number system for now. We’ll continue exploring other methods for identifying and tracking your trademark applications.
As part of the nation’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the USPTO will be at the Great American State Fair from June 25 through July 10.
