USPTO will no longer accept faxed documents starting July 1
As of July 1, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will no longer accept trademark documents filed by fax. If you can’t access the USPTO’s filing system on your deadline, you can still mail or hand deliver your documents with a petition to accept paper. We’ll consider your submission to be timely filed if it’s deposited in a U.S. Postal Service collection box on your filing deadline. Include our coversheet with your submission to certify that you’ve filed on your deadline.
Why we’re making this change
Faxes often don’t reproduce well in our systems, and they require time-intensive manual processing. This can delay examination, which means longer wait times for you. Eliminating them bolsters our focus on the issues that matter to you and it helps normalize wait times.
The change also aligns with our rules of practice. Although our rules state that we don’t accept faxed filings, we made a temporary exemption when we introduced the identity verification requirement, aiming to ease your transition. And it worked—demand for the exemption has decreased considerably, and virtually all filers have verified their identity.
