USPTO to enhance its anti-fraud technology suite
Today, America's Branding Agency, the USPTO, is enhancing its formidable technology stack to protect the trademark register from fraud and other emerging threats. Here's the latest:
Smarter system designs for future efficiency
New case management and workflow systems are being deployed to streamline internal processes and create a more efficient pathway for teams to identify, review, and remove fraudulent or improper filings from the trademark register.
AI-powered fraud detection pilots
We're moving ahead with a proof-of-concept for a real-time digital “watchdog” using AI to analyze trademark submission data. This project has already delivered promising results. In a test run, the tool identified the top filers exhibiting suspicious behavior, validating its accuracy by flagging the same bad actors the USPTO had already identified. This confirms the technology’s potential as a powerful asset for proactively identifying and stopping misuse of USPTO.gov accounts.
Next-generation fraud detection exploration
To enhance our fraud detection capabilities, we are looking to the private sector for cutting-edge solutions. We’re investigating how these technologies can help us:
- Identify and address high-risk submissions with greater speed and accuracy
- Detect common data points among fraudulent filings to better understand and counter bad actors
- Clear the path for legitimate applications by quickly identifying and removing improper filings
By embracing innovation and exploring cutting-edge technology, the USPTO is building a stronger, more resilient foundation for securing the trademark register. Authenticity is the name of the game.
