The USPTO has been informed that Mr. Royal was escorted by legal authorities to Reagan National and that he presently is on a plane en route to his home in Austin, Texas.

Federal Protective Service in Dallas (a layover point) has also been informed of the current status.

On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Mr. Royal is scheduled to appear at a hearing in Texas to prove that he is, in fact, in Texas.
Note: Out of an abundance of caution, and until further notice, we will maintain our current status and level of security measures for campus access for employees and the general public.
We provide the latest alert from Friday afternoon, February 6th, for additional context.
  Further to yesterday’s Security Alert – the court in Arlington, Virginia ordered Mr. Gregory Allen Royal’s release but postponed his release until Monday, February 9 and he will remain in custody over the weekend. On Monday, February 9, law enforcement will escort him to pre-arranged transportation for him to return to Texas, his state of residence. On Wednesday, February 11, he is required to confirm that he is, in fact, in Texas.
Until such time, this BOLO remains in effect. USPTO employees should be on alert in the event these conditions are not fulfilled.
To reiterate, if you see or come in contact with Mr. Royal, DO NOT engage in any manner. Instead:
- Immediately call 911 or
- Immediately contact the Security Command Center by:
- calling 571-272-7800,
- pressing a Blue Light/Call Box located throughout the East Garage, or
- notifying the nearest Security Officer.

For Monday, February 9, the USPTO Alexandria Campus will be open for business and to the public; the additional security measures referred to in the prior Security Alert have been implemented. These include:
- Government PIV badges must be presented for entry to the building and visibly worn at all times while in any USPTO facility;
- Additional guards will be on duty, including in the parking structures, and at the child care center entrance;
- Members of the general public must present ID for admission to the building and any facilities therein; and
- Additional patrols from Alexandria PD and the Federal Protective Service (FPS) have been scheduled.
In addition to the above security enhancements, additional long-term measures are being installed.
