New OMH Blog on Addressing Syphilis in AI/AN Communities
Syphilis is a serious but preventable sexually transmitted infection that can cause chronic health issues or even death if left untreated. Syphilis is an urgent area of concern within American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities due to the alarming rise in syphilis cases.
The latest post on the OMH Blog for Health Equity by Alessandro Gravina looks at some of the ways the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is working to eliminate health disparities among AI/AN communities by identifying cultural and linguistic factors that influence the healthcare experiences and health outcomes of AI/AN populations.

Good Food Access Program Equipment and Physical Improvement Grant
Grant from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture for projects that increase the availability of and access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate foods (including fruits and vegetables) for underserved communities in low- and moderate-income areas. Grants help grocery stores and small food retailers make physical improvements and purchase equipment to stimulate sales of such foods. Deadline is January 16, 2025.

Access to Health Care in Rural America: Current Trends and Key Challenges
This research report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation describes patterns in insurance coverage and uninsurance rates in rural and urban areas, reviews non-financial challenges in accessing care faced by many rural residents and describes disparities in health outcomes between urban and rural areas. It discusses policies, programs, and resources designed to address barriers to care in rural America and the important role that federal and state health care coverage programs like Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Marketplace, and Medicare play in providing health insurance coverage for rural residents.

Improving Screening and Therapy for Hispanic/Latinx at Risk for Chronic Kidney Disease
This study, sponsored by Duke University in collaboration with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, will utilize community organizations to screen Hispanics/Latino(a)s for kidney disease, diabetes, and other risk factors, and refer them for care with a primary care physician (PCP). Additionally, the investigators will implement an intervention in local health clinics to assist PCPs with screening and treating patients with diabetes This study will take place in Durham, North Carolina.
Mobile Technologies Extending Reach of Primary Care for Substance Use Disorders
This study, sponsored by Chess Mobile Health in collaboration with NIDA, will evaluate efficacy of the enhanced version of the CHESS Health eIntervention in a clinical setting for those with moderate risk drug or alcohol use and those at high risk or with substance use disorder as measured by the ASSIST and the AUDIT assessment tools. This study will take place in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

mHealth Training Institute (mHTI) Scholars
This hybrid institute from the mHealth Center for Discovery, Optimization & Translation of Temporally Precise Interventions will host 25 health, behavioral, social, and other science scholars. Through a week-long workshop, the mHTI helps the selected scholars develop a shared vocabulary and conceptual framework, acquire core domain expertise in latest mHealth technologies and methodologies, and get practical experience in cross-disciplinary mHealth innovation. Application due by January 2, 2025.
Emergency Preparedness and Access to Care for LGBTQIA+ Communities Learning Collaborative
The National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center will host a four-part learning collaborative focused on climate-smart healthcare in health centers to meet the needs of diverse LGBTQIA+ communities. Participants will hear from emergency management experts, who will provide insights into how health centers can develop inclusive and affirming emergency preparedness plans.
