Syphilis is a serious but preventable sexually transmitted infection that can cause chronic health issues or even death if left untreated. Syphilis is an urgent area of concern within American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities due to the alarming rise in cases. While many populations have been affected by syphilis, AI/AN communities had the largest increase in primary and secondary syphilis of all racial and ethnic groups between 2019 and 2023. Rates of congenital syphilis among AI/AN people continue to rise, increasing from approximately 200 cases per 100,000 people in 2019 to 680.8 cases per 100,000 people in 2023.
