Think Cultural Health

The Think Cultural Health (TCH) quarterly newsletter raises awareness of culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) in health and health care. The November special edition newsletter announces the public launch of TCH’s new Cultural Competency Program for Disaster and Emergency Management with articles related to culturally relevant preparedness and relief work.

NIH Needs Your Input on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking your input on the NIH Minority Health and Health Disparities Strategic Plan, 2026-2030 with a community virtual townhall and a newly released Request for Information (RFI).

The townhall and RFI are open to community members, health care professionals, researchers, and advocates. Your experiences, priorities, and insights can help guide the future of NIH’s minority health and health disparities research efforts. Key areas for input include:

  • Health disparities to address.
  • Strategies to improve minority health.
  • Advancing technologies.
  • Outreach with communities.
  • Inclusion of diverse populations in research.

Register for the virtual townhall on December 4, at 1:00 p.m. ET.
RFI submissions are due by December 31 through the
Feedback Form.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month!

Join the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help bring awareness to Alzheimer’s disease and inform the public about the signs and symptoms and the healthy habits we can adopt to reduce our likelihood of developing the disease. Use the resources from the toolkit in your communications to help share information about Alzheimer’s disease.

Rural development block grants from the Texas Department of Agriculture provide eligible applicants with grants to fund water and wastewater improvements, housing rehabilitation for low- to moderate-income households, and other projects.

Cooperative agreement from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to maintain and expand a national clearinghouse for information on rural health that supports improving health care in rural areas, including access to health care. The clearinghouse should build upon federally funded resources that currently exist, and will serve as a primary resource for information, opportunities, and tools related to rural health nationally.

The Rural Emergency Hospital Model: Year Two Progress Report

The Rural Emergency Hospital Model

In response to increasing rural hospital closures, the United States Congress established the Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) model to provide struggling facilities a novel care delivery option in the Medicare program when their full closure would cause significant hardship to their community. Since the REH model’s launch in 2023, 32 rural hospitals in 14 states have converted. The policy recommendations, if implemented, could ensure that the REH model reaches its full potential as an effective and sustainable care delivery option for a rural community that would suffer if a facility closed.

Engagement of American Indians of Southwestern Tribal Nations in Cancer Genome Sequencing

This study, sponsored by the New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance in collaboration with NCI, examines engagement strategies for recruiting American Indians of Southwestern Tribal Nations for cancer genome sequencing. This study may help researchers learn how genetic changes in cells cause cancer and understand how and why cancer is arising in American Indians in the Southwest. This study will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Traditional Indigenous Foods Diet and Health Study

This study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center, will determine whether eating a diet made up of traditional indigenous foods from the Northern Great Plains area will spontaneously result in an increase in physical activity by American Indians, and whether the diet improves metabolic measures of health, mood, and self-regulation of healthy eating and engaging in physical activity. This study will take place in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Postdoctoral T32 Fellowship in Translational Science, HIV, and Sexual and Gender Minority Health

The Northwestern Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing is the first university-wide institute in the country focused exclusively on research to improve the health of the sexual and gender minority (SGM) community, with more than a decade of experience training successful postdoctoral fellows. Fellows can focus their own research on any area of human immunodeficiency virus and/or SGM health embedded within ongoing studies led by faculty mentors.

This annual report from the Alzheimer's Association presents national- and state-level statistics about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in the United States. This year’s edition contains a special report entitled “Mapping a Better Future for Dementia Care Navigation,” which examines the challenges of dementia care navigation faced by caregivers and health care workers.
