October is Health Literacy Month – a time when health organizations, literacy programs, libraries, social service agencies, businesses, professional associations, government agencies, and other groups work together to integrate and expand the mission of health literacy.

Cooperative agreement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the establishment of the Whole Person Research and Coordination Center. This center will be integral in coordinating the initial and future research programs and networks in whole person health research. Deadline is November 1.
Community Food Projects Competitive Grant Program
Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to help meet the food needs of food-insecure individuals through food distribution, develop community outreach programs to assist in participation in Federal nutrition assistance programs, and improve access to nutrient dense food as part of a comprehensive service. Small Ambulatory Program

Mood and Psychosis Symptoms during the Menopause Transition
Grant from the NIH to advance translational research to better understand the emergence and worsening of mood and psychotic disorders during the menopause transition to identity targets for future development of novel treatment interventions. Deadline is November 5.
HEAL Knowledge, Innovation and Discovery Studies (KIDS): Chronic Pain Program
Cooperative agreement from the NIH to conduct interdisciplinary team-based research projects that combine clinical research, novel/cutting-edge technologies, and measurement science, which will improve our understanding of primary and secondary chronic pain conditions in children and adolescents. Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts Across the U.S. 2024
This report from the March of Dimes reveals that over 35% of counties in the United States are considered maternity care deserts – counties where there is no access to birthing hospitals, birth centers offering obstetric care, or obstetric providers. Data confirms that women living in maternity care deserts and counties with low access to care have poorer health before pregnancy, receive less prenatal care, and experience higher rates of preterm birth.

Improving Health Insurance Literacy Among Utah's Hispanic Population
This study, sponsored by the University of Utah in collaboration with the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, will evaluate whether the health insurance education program delivered by Utah Health Policy Project staff improves participants' health insurance and cost-related literacy. Participants will complete a brief baseline survey, be guided through the program, and complete a brief survey/interview after completing the session. This study will take place in West Valley City, Utah.
Digital Health Navigation for Latino Patients with Type II Diabetes
This study, sponsored by Brigham and Women's Hospital in collaboration with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, aims to learn about digital literacy training in adult, Latino patients with type II diabetes. Researchers will compare patients who receive digital literacy training to those who receive standard of care (educational sheet) to see if it impacts their use of a patient portal after discharge. This study will take place in Boston, Massachusetts.

NIHCM Foundation Health Care Journalism Grant Program
The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation supports health reporting and education projects that inform public and policymaker awareness about health issues in ways that improve health and health care. NIHCM Foundation provides grants for health reporting, educational opportunities for health care journalists, visual storytelling, and support for documentary films and their public engagement campaigns. October is National Health Literacy Month, and the OMH Knowledge Center is featuring a collection of documents titled The Roles of Trust and Health Literacy in Achieving Health Equity. These documents summarize the proceedings of a public workshop held by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy on September 22, 2022. The workshop explored how promoting health literacy in clinical, community, and public health institution settings can positively impact health equity.
