FYI: Weekly Health Resources

National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 – October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month! This annual observance is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions, diversity, and vibrant culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans. This year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) is observing National Hispanic Heritage Month through its theme, Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections.

This theme calls on each of us to better understand how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances (known as social determinants of health, or “SDOH”) of Hispanic/Latino populations impact their overall health.

Universal Symbol for Language Assistance Services in Health Settings Survey

OMH is currently researching and developing new ways to communicate the availability of language assistance services to individuals with LEP in health care settings by developing multiple graphic symbols to inform LEP individuals of these services. We have released a 15-minute survey to collect input from the public on the usability and effectiveness of these symbols. OMH welcomes all input from the public, especially individuals whose primary/preferred language is not English. More information on this project and other language access priorities is available on OMH’s website. The survey is available in nine languages.
