“Improved Treatments for Children with Sickle Cell Disease” Webinar
The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will host a webinar with our grant recipient, New York City Health + Hospitals located in Jamaica, New York, about their work to help improve the quality of life for children with sickle cell disease (SCD).
SCD disproportionately affects African Americans, and although hydroxyurea is effective in reducing pain encounters and hospitalizations, too few children are receiving this treatment. The convening will be an opportunity to hear from our recipient about their efforts to increase hydroxyurea prescription rates. September 17 at 12:00 p.m. ET.

Observance: September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
Approximately 1 in 5 U.S. children and adolescents have obesity. Obesity affects some groups more than others, including adolescents, Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black children, and children in families with lower incomes. Although there is no one solution, there are many ways parents and caregivers can help children have a healthy weight and set up lifelong healthy habits. Learn more about how to prevent childhood obesity from the CDC and use the MyHealthFinder tool to help your child stay at a healthy weight.
